In this time, the lack of resources is a big problem for human beings. However, people have done relatively little to exploit the biggest and the wealthiest part of the earth ---- sea. There is no long history about the intensive study of the sea, but it is demonstrable that the potentiality of the harness of the sea if of considerable magnitude.
The first thing that we think can get from the sea is food. Our ancestors have been fed on sea food for thousands of years. And by distilling water from the sea we can get the important drinking water and the salt which is the same important. With the rapid development of technology and the deeper study of the sea, people can make the use of plankton as a source of protein to feed the growing world population, which is now a serious problem to the world. Being more fascinating, we can even cultivate the sea bed, modulating the acute situation of farmland shortage.
Not only food but power can we get from the sea. It is possible for people now to harness the tides to provide electricity. As we can see ceaseless are the tides, so I believe, with the engineers’ endeavor, the dream of endless power will come true one day.
In addition, the sea also can provide us with large quantities of minerals and oil, which are difficult to be extracted or rare in land. For example, The North Sea is a well-known water for the rich storage of oil.
Now some people suggest a revolutionary idea that setting up permanent villages under the sea, to solve the problem of the blooming house demand of growing population. And Jacques Cousteau has invented the scuba machine, making it possible for human beings living under the sea for a long time. It’s amazing imagining we living and working with those beautiful fishes and coral reef in the deeps.
But when it comes to exploitation, it should be fixed in mind that we can’t break the balance of the nature. The sustaining exploitation can never be overemphasized, without which we won’t better our living but worsen it.
